Imagine, for a moment, on arrival for a doctor’s visit, your child is greeted – digitally – by Winnie the Pooh. All of a sudden, delight overtakes any nervousness and a positive memory is formed.

Likewise, imagine you’re entering a wellness spa in which the materials reflect ancient restorative bathing practices, where the temperature and scent remind you of a breezy summer’s day. Straight away, your senses are stirred and you feel at ease.

Imagine a dentist’s waiting area which feels like a luxury lounge, not a typical waiting room, reassuring you that you are in the best possible place for care.

Picture attending any healthcare appointment, where you are fully briefed on what is going to happen (digitally or in real time) giving a sense of competence and support. Seeing open spaces with clear sightlines, but also enjoying the privacy of a quiet area to yourself. Those small experiences are the start of a positive consumer journey that our future-thinking approach can create.

Health and wellbeing are no longer standalone concepts – they are now inextricably linked, and for the better. Where, previously, a sterile, functional and unwelcoming healthcare setting would’ve been the norm, wellness is now a central consideration in the physical environments we visit. After all, the fear and anxiety that can accompany a trip to the doctor, dentist or dermatologist doesn’t need to be exacerbated by cold surroundings.

As designers, it’s our job to take those clinical spaces and look at how people interact and behave within them. We understand that creating a connection with visitors to your space is key to consumer loyalty. We know the importance of evolving to meet the needs of consumers, who are increasingly savvy both in person and in a digital environment.

We take those formerly clinical spaces and transform them into places that function, yes, but also evoke a warmth, an empathy and a sense of wellbeing that’s critical to enhancing the experience of visitors to those spaces. That sense of comfort and safety fosters emotional connection, positivity and importantly, returning visitors who will enthuse about their experience to others.

As interior designers and architects, focusing solely on physical spaces is no longer enough – we’re building meaningful experiences holistically, blending the physical with the digital seamlessly.
